Nothing showed off the design of its upcoming smartphone, the Nothing Phone (2A), at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The full launch of the phone is scheduled for March 5.
For the time being, Nothing has given fans a quick reveal of the phone from under the glass at the world’s largest mobile trade show.
The Phone (2a) arrived at the convention floor on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, the company posted an unboxing video to its YouTube channel.
Nothing Reveals The Design Of Upcoming Phone (2a) At MWC 2024
Just like Nothing’s previous flagships – Phone (1) and Phone (2) – the Phone (2a) features a transparent industrial design. Moreover, the Phone (2a) also carries over the trademark illuminated Glyphs from its predecessors.
However, several notable changes can be observed in the phone’s design. In the unboxing video, you can see that the Phone (2a) has a centrally placed dual rear camera setup and a plastic design that allows for a degree of transparency on its sides.
The Glyph placement is also different from the Phone (1) and Phone (2), with the device lighting up around the camera, while the bottom half of the phone has a swerving design that appears to integrate the number two.
Nothing did not say how the Glyphs will behave on the Phone (2a), but it is clear at first look that the setup is different than from earlier iterations of its phones. While the first and second-generation Nothing Phones had five or more animated Glyph lights on the rear panel, the Phone (2a) seems to have just three.
Glyphs Are Here To Stay But With A Slight Redesign
Glyphs generally provide Nothing Phone users with basic information about incoming calls and other notifications. Users can also choose from a list of patterns that will light up in different ways based on the app or service they set the notification for.
In terms of product placement, the Phone (2a) is expected to fall somewhere between last year’s Phone (2) and 2022’s Phone (1).
In an earlier teaser video, Nothing revealed that the upcoming Phone (2a) will run on a Mediatek processor instead of the Qualcomm Snapdragon chips found on the Phone (1) and Phone (2).
Phone (2a) Will Be A Budget-Friendly Alternative To The Flagship Phone (2)
Although the company didn’t reveal the phone’s pricing, it looks to be a cheaper alternative to the $599 Phone (2), taking into account the choice to go with a plastic rather than metal for the phone’s frame.
The Phone (2a), which has reportedly been under development for nearly two years, is also a sneak peek into the direction that Nothing’s design language is taking. Design cues from the soon-to-be-unveiled budget smartphone are expected to be carried over to the British company’s next flagship – the Nothing Phone (3).
Once launched, the Phone (2a) will be competing in the cheaper flagship market with the likes of the $500 OnePlus 12R, the $600 Samsung Galaxy S23 FE, and the $499 Google Pixel 7A.
Nothing Phone (2a) Will Be Launched On March 5
Nothing Phone (2a) will not be widely available in the US, similar to its predecessors. US customers can get their hands on the device after it is launched on March 5 by visiting the Nothing website and registering as a developer.
