Zambian SIM reg deadline extended

The Zambian government has extended the SIM card registration exercise by a month in order to allow the more people to register their cards.
The Zambia Information and Communication Technology Authority (ZICTA) set December 31, 2013 as the deadline for SIM card registration.
But the Minister of Communications and Transport Yamfwa Mukanga said the Zambian government has extended the registration exercise because of the overwhelming response that the exercise has received from subscribers in the last few days.
The minister said he was also impressed with the collaboration between ZICTA and the country’s three mobile operators on the SIM registration exercise.
“The extension should be taken as official notification and therefore supersedes the earlier announced phased approach to SIM card deactivation,” Mukanga said.
Various stakeholders were pushing the Zambian government to extend the registration deadline in order to give subscribers sufficient time to register their SIM cards.
The Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) had called on ZICTA to push the deadline to the end of February 2014 in order to give subscribers sufficient time to register their SIM cards.
According to records at ZICTA, just over five million people had by December 31 registered their SIM cards out of a total subscriber base of slightly above 10 million.
