Zambia: over 4.5 million SIMs registered
Zambia’s Ministry of Transport, Works, Supply and Communications says over 4.5 million SIM cards have been registered since the start of national SIM registration in 2012.
In an update by the Minister of Transport, Works, Supply and Communications, Yamfwa D. Mukanga, the government said MTN Zambia had been the first to begin registering customers, on 23 July 2012, and had registered 2.46 million subscribers to date. Airtel Zambia had started registering subscribers on 31 August 2012, and had since registered 1.7 million SIMs. Zamtel Mobile, which commenced the registration exercise on 31 October 2012, had registered 352,753.
The Minister noted that the SIM registration exercise was scheduled to end on 31 December this year, after which unregistered SIM cards will be deactivated. Anyone buying, selling or activating an unregistered SIM card after November 15 this year could be liable for prosecution.
