As in our recent cartoon, late night phone spam is becoming an annoyance

Zambia’s ICT authority has warned mobile operators to limit the number of promotional SMSes sent to their subscribers.

The Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) says it has instructed the three operators, Airtel, MTN and Zamtel, to cut back on the number of promotional SMSes it sends customers, with immediate effect.

In response to complaints from mobile phone users about the growing number of spam SMSes they receive, ZICTA says no promotional messages may be sent between 20:00 at night and 07:00 in the morning; only one promotional SMS may be sent per day; and only one promotional SMS of the same nature may be transmitted each week.

With effect from 1 September, consumers must be given the option to unsubscribe from such communications.

ZICTA says that while sending promotional messages via mobile are not an offence, it calls on operators to be cognizant of their obligation to deal reasonably with consumers.
