UCC wraps up SIM reg
The Ugandan regulator says it is in the final stages of tallying data from the SIM registration programme.
TheUganda Communications Commission (UCC) launched the SIM registration exercise in March last year, with March this year as the cut-off date.
The UCC says it is now in the advanced stages of compiling and tallying the resulting data, and expects to have completed the process by the end of this month.
The process was challenged earlier this year. However, the UCC argued that the registration of SIM cards in Uganda was in line with The Regulation of Interception of Communications Act, 2010.
“The registration exercise intends to, among others, help law enforcement agencies to identify the mobile phone SIM Card owners, track criminals who use phones for illegal activities, curb other negative incidents, and also help service providers know their customers better” explained UCC Executive Director Godfrey Mutabazi.
