Tigo tightens mobile money security

Tigo Tanzania says it is tightening security around its Tigo Pesa mobile money service.

The telco said most fraudulent transactions were committed by people who have assumed the identity of the rightful Pesa owner, or by tricking the victim into sharing information, then performing a SIM swap to access the victim’s money.

Tigo now only performs a SIM swap if an account holder requests it at a Tigo Customer Service centre and presents valid ID.

Diego Gutierrez, Tigo’s General Manager, urged customers not to share their personal information or pin numbers, and to take responsibility for the security of their Pesa accounts.
