Tanzanian phone subs up to 25m
Tanzanian fixed and mobile phone subscribers have passed the 25.8 million mark, according to statistics released by the Tanzanian Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA).
Figures released recently by TCRA for Q4 2011 showed steady growth in numbers, up from 23.9 million three months earlier to 25.827 million by the end of December.
Vodacom remained the market leader, with 11.625 million subscribers and an average growth of 4% per month. Airtel is second in the market, with 6.993 subscribers but an average growth rate of only 0.5% and Tigo is third in terms of subscriber numbers, with 5.45 million and a growth average of 1%. Zantel is showing good growth, with an average monthly growth rate of 3% to a total of 1.524 million subscribers. Operators Benson and SasaTel showed negative growth in the quarter.
In the fixed line segment, TCRA reported 161,063 fixed lines in service, down from 174,000 at the start of the year.
By December 3, Vodacom and Airtel each had 94% of their subscribers’ SIM cards registered, Tigo had 92% and Zantel 69%.
