Sonitel to be nationalised

Niger’s Parliament has voted to nationalise telco Sonitel.

The decision comes after plans to privatise the telecommunications provider failed.

Late last year, the government launched a new round of bidding for Sonitel and its mobile division, SahelCom, after plans to sell it to Lap Green Networks were derailed.

The government has now voted to nationalise the entity. The National Assembly said the government would invest in the telco over the next five years.
