SIM levy to knock subscribers
A new monthly SIM charge is likely to cut off up to eight million people, a Tanzanian mobile lobby group has warned.
The government has introduced a TZS1,000 (USD) monthly charge on every SIM card. However, the Mobile Operators Association of Tanzania (MOAT) says in a statement that up to 8 million subscribers spend less than the levy amount on calls every month.
It says the levy, aimed at supporting development initiatives to support the poor, would in fact negatively impact those it sought to help.
MOAT said the charge would hamper further mobile penetration, particularly in rural areas.
