SA ready for smart ID project
Over ten years after first announcing a smart ID card project, the South African government says is it now ready to embark on a smart ID pilot.
The SA government first mooted a biometric smart ID card in the 1990s, and began work on the Home Affairs National Identification System (HANIS) in 2001.
However, the project was stalled and amounted to nothing.
SA Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma said at a media briefing ahead of her department’s 2012 Budget Vote that the new smart ID would now be piloted in the next six months, beginning with those applying for their identity documents for the first time.
A national roll-out of the new ID cards is planned to begin next year.
