British tech startup Nothing is on a roll this year, introducing the world to the Phone (2a) and the first smartphone under its budget-friendly sub-brand, CMF – the CMF Phone (1). Now the company has teased the arrival of a new device that is rumored to be a bigger version of the Phone 2a.
Key Takeaways:
Nothing Set To Release Plus Version of The Phone (2a) With Better Specs
In an X post on July 18th, the company uploaded a picture of what seems to be the back panel of the Phone 2a, along with the tagline “Plus. More. Extra. Get ready for Phone (2a) Plus”. The tweet suggests we may be in store for a larger phone with a bigger display and potentially better specs than the standard version.
Nothing also released a press note, where it announced the name of the upcoming device and its launch date of July 31st. The company said an “extraordinary new smartphone is coming”.
The startup founded by the former CEO of OnePlus is known for its catchy and creative marketing techniques. Previously, Nothing posted a picture of Mega Aerodractyl, a Pokemon that is the beefed-up version of the Aerodractyl, hinting that something more powerful was on its way.
Following the launch of its flagship smartphones – Phone (1) and Phone (2) – in 2022 and 2023, respectively, Nothing took a slightly different route this year to release a budget smartphone with flagship-rivaling specs in the form of the Phone 2a.
The Phone 2a, unveiled in March, is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 chipset with up to 12GB RAM and 256GB of internal storage. The device is priced at a reasonable $370. However, it is only available in a select few markets.
There is not much information available on the upcoming Phone 2a Plus, but several media reports have stated that the phone has been spotted on multiple certification websites including the UAE’s Telecommunication and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) and India’s Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
Nothing Phone (2a) Plus Could Be A Special Edition
A rumor doing rounds is that the Phone 2a Plus could be a Nothing Community Edition project and not necessarily an entirely new smartphone.
Back in March, Nothing announced the Community Edition Project, which invited community members to participate in a competition where they designed and customized the Phone 2a. The campaign was divided into four stages – hardware design, wallpaper design, packaging design, and marketing.
The first three stages of the campaign have been completed, with Nothing even launching a Special Edition of the Phone 2a, featuring all three of the smartphone’s primary colors: red, blue, and yellow. The device was only available in certain markets.
On July 10th, Nothing announced that it was starting the final stage of marketing its smartphone, which could be the Phone 2a Plus. In an X post announcing Stage 4, the company said the product was almost ready and it was time to look at the “bigger picture”.
Nothing Phone (3), Powered By AI, Will Come Out In Summer 2025
Those expecting the Nothing Phone 3 will have to wait until next year. Recently, Nothing’s CEO Carl Pei took to X to reveal that its next flagship smartphone won’t be launching this year as the company wanted to focus more on developing the technology to integrate the phone’s hardware with AI.
He said the team is in the process of designing and prototyping AI interactions, which is expected to be improved as months go by and will be gradually introduced to its smartphones, “starting with the Phone 3 next year”.
The Nothing Phone (2a) Plus seems to be the company’s next smartphone until we get our hands on the Phone (3) in 2025. The new budget phone will be unveiled at 5 AM ET on July 31st.
