Nigeria MNP tests get underway

MNP testing is set to begin in Nigeria this month, ahead of the planned launch next year.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) will test the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) porting system this month, said the NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Tony Ojobo.

MNP is expected to boost mobile competition, as it will allow consumers to switch between operators without losing their numbers.

It is expected to be implemented in the first quarter of next year.

Dr. Eugene Juwah, the executive vice chairman of the NCC said earlier this year that the regulator had selected a consortium of three companies – Interconnect, Saab Grintek and Telcordia – to manage the implementation of MNP. The consortium will be responsible for the set up and implementation of the MNP Clearing House and administer MNP in the country
