New youth ICT programme from BITRI

The Botswana government continues to come up with innovative programmes that are aimed at empowering the youths in the information communication technology sector ICT. In a recent development, the government, through its relevant institutions has come up with a new youth associate ICT programme. 

The first group of the Botswana Institute of Technology Research and Innovation (BITRI) Youth Associate ICT Programme called [email protected] reported recently at the institution.

A statement from BITRI stated that the programme, which is aimed at developing youth entrepreneurial skills comprised of 20 interns to be placed at Kanye.  The programme will target a total of 60 participants with the remaining 40 to be placed at Palapye on the dates to be announced.

The same statement states that the competency based programme where young Batswana will be involved in BITRI research programmes over a two- year period will be hands-on experimental teaching techniques and interaction participation to prepare participants for planning, starting and operating a small business in the ICT sector.

According to the available information, the said programme is aimed at developing competencies in ICT as well as qualities leading to self-esteem, critical thinking and problem solving skills needed for an effective management of a set up business.

It states that “emphasis will be placed on innovation, market research, financingbusiness opportunity identification, goal setting, business planning, presentation skills, time management and day to day activities of owning or operating a business.”

The statement states that BITRI objective is to develop, adopt and enhance technologies for the benefit of Batswana in order to improve lives and provide equal opportunities.

The Botswana Institute for Technology Research and Innovation (BITRI) is a parastatal under the Ministry of Infrastructure Science and Technology, established in 2012 through an Act of Parliament, to conduct needs-based research and development in focused areas in accordance with national priorities.

“The mandate of BITRI is to identify and/ or develop appropriate technology solutions in line with national priorities and needs of Batswana. The technologies will as much as possible maximize the use of local materials to ensure efficiency and affordability.

“BITRI will harness its institutional capacity as well as collaborate with other organizations and institutions. BITRI is situated at Maranyane House in Gaborone, Botswana. It has another campus in Gaborone, Kanye as well as Palapye,” said the BITRI communiqué.
