New Kenyan party goes social
Kenya’s new United Republican Party launched online and social media campaigns to spread its message – and promptly got hacked.
The United Republican Party was officially formed last month by William Ruto and rebel ODM MPs including Trade Minister Chirau Mwakwere, Turkana Central MP Ekwee Ethuro, his Wajir South MP Mohammed Sirat and Cyrus Jirongo of Lugari.
The party launched a facebook campaign to recruit new members and opened a website and Twitter presence to share information. The website was hacked shortly after being launched, with a message posted on the site saying the site should have been more secure. The site is now functional again.
The party is also recruiting members via cellphone. Citizens wanting to join the party can do so via SMS by sending their full name, ID Number and County, to 7711
