MTN Ghana honors stakeholders to climax MoMo @ 10 Anniversary Celebrations

MTN Ghana has recognised and honored some distinguished individuals and corporate institutions for their significant contributions in diverse ways in championing the case lite agenda through MTN Mobile Money in Ghana over a decade.

At the MTN MoMo @ 10 Stakeholders Dinner and Awards night held in Accra at the luxurious Kempinski Hotel, these personalities and institutions were awarded with citations and plagues to climax the 10 Anniversary celebrations of MTN Mobile Money.

Giving snapshots accounts of the MTN MoMo journey in his welcoming address, the General Manager for Mobile Financial Services at MTN Eli Hini acknowledged former MTN Ghana’s CEO, Brett Goschen under whose leadership the MTN Mobile Money service was launched in July 21st 2009, and recognised Tarek Itani, an MTN staff for making the first transaction on 25th Sept, 2008 at 3:51pm.

“I would like to take the opportunity to thank our key stakeholders particularly the pioneering Staff, Distributors, Regulators, Partner banks, Merchants, Agents and customers for their immense support and loyalty during the past decade. Please join me give our ‘collaborators’ a resounding round of applause for their significant contributions to the success of MTN MoMo,” he said.

According to him a decade down the line, MoMo has become the foremost financial Services platform in the country.

“Today, there are about six major categories of financial transactions on the MoMo platform under which there are other sub - services.  On MoMo today, we are not just sending and receiving money or paying bills, MoMo is now used forSaving, Investing,Payments, Shopping, Insurance and Loan acquisition,” he said.

“As at the end of November this year, we had over 140,000 active Mobile Money agents. We also have over 5000 mobile agents/canvassers. Some of these agents and canvassers, prior to the introduction of MoMo had no meaningful employments,” he added.

Mr. Hini who expressed optimism about the future prospect of mobile financial services in the country, said despite some few challenges with key amongst them, dealing with MoMo fraud and perception coupled with increasing payments; the future continuous to look bright for mobile financial services in Ghana.

He further stressed that there’s more to be done in terms of innovation going into the future, and believed that given the same commitment and leadership support it had 10 years ago, MTN MoMo would remain the preferred option for mobile financial transactions in the country.

Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana Limited, Mr Selorm Adadevoh said MoMo enhanced financial inclusion, economic growth, and accelerated development.

Amongst some of the notable guests honored that night include the Deputy Minister of Communication, George Nenyi Andah as the “MoMo Brand Builder”, the Vice President for South East Africa and Ghana, Ebenezer Twum Asante, was adjudged the “MoMo Game Changer” and Mr. Bruno Akpaka recognised as the “MoMo Master Minder”. Mr. Gideon Osei Amoako was also honored with the “MoMo Patron” Award.

The rest include Mrs. Elly Ohene-Adu as the “MoMo Power Broker”, Dr. Settor Kwabla Amediku as the “MoMo Regulatory Influencer” and Mr. Eli Hini as the “MoMo Trailblazer”.

Financial institutions including Fidelity Bank, Ecobank, Cal Bank, GT Bank, Access Bank, Zenith Bank, UBA, UMB and Stanbic Bank were honored as “Pioneering MoMo Partner Banks”, while Barclays Bank, Republic Bank and First Atlantic Bank were named as “Emerging Partner Banks with Great Impact”.

“MoMo Fintech Pioneer” went to IT Consortium and CoreNett Limited. appsNmobile Solutions was awarded “Emerging and Innovative Fintech Partner”.

DSTV of MultiChoice Ghana Limited also received the First “MoMo Bill Payment Award”.
