MTN Ghana celebrates 20 years of operations in Ghana

MTN Ghana has unveiled its 20th Anniversary logo at a grand ceremony held at the iconic MTN House in Accra to officially mark the 20 years of operations in the country. The celebration, which will span a period of three months, will focus on rewarding its teeming customers nationwide through the launch of gargantuan promotion expected to be announced later this month.

Addressing stakeholders at the external 20th Anniversary celebration launch, the Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Mr. Ebenezer Twum Asante indicated that the celebration of 20 years of MTN existence in the Ghanaian market is perhaps the biggest milestone of all.

“Indeed, 2016 is a year of big celebrations for MTN in Ghana. About six weeks, we formally commissioned the state-of-the-art corporate headquarters building, which symbolizes our commitment to the future of Ghana. By midyear, we will celebrate the formal launch of 4G LTE services to MTN customers,” he said.

Registered legally in Ghana with authorization to operate GSM system, Scancom was born in 1994. And from 1996 through to 2006, when MTN entered the picture to date, Scancom through MTN says it has brought positive change to Ghana with technology.

With staff strength of approximately 20 in 1996, including six Ghanaians, MTN Ghana now boast of 1,919 employees. Out of which 685 are direct employees, 57 contract employees and 1, 177 third party contractors.

According to Mr. Twum Asante, MTN Ghana has grown in every aspect of the Business and contributed it growth to the strategic and consistent investments into its network.

“Our total infrastructure investments for 2006 to date are over USD 2.5 Billion. This year we are investing USD 96 Million into network, made up of USD 62 Million into the traditional network, USD 16 Million in IT, and USD 18 Million LTE deployment. As you are already aware, we paid USD 67.5 Million for our 4G LTE license” he said.

The CEO of the leading network operator with a current subscriber base of 17 million in Ghana believes that in moving forward, the rolling out and full commercialization of 4G services by MTN is the next game changer. He further revealed that whilst MTN 4G rollout will be a key driver of growth of Value Added Services businesses and MTN Business it will also keep on driving the momentum around key trends such as video streaming, internet of Things (IoT) and mobile payment.
