MTN Cameroon wins ‘’Y’ello Care” challenge again

MTN Cameroon, leader of the telecommunications sector and Best Socially Responsible Company in Cameroon, has emerged the winner of the 9th edition of MTN Group employees’ charitable programme dubbed “21 Days of Y’ello Care”. The information was made public today by MTN Group President and CEO, Sifiso Dabengwa to staff of the 22 Operations of the MTN Group worldwide.

Launched in 2007, the “21 Days of Y’ello Care” benevolent programme and associated challenge runs each year from 1 to 21 June in all the affiliates of MTN Group in 22 countries, and permits employees to carry out relevant social actions geared at enhancing the living conditions of communities.

Placed under the theme ‘’Investing in Education for All’’, the 2015 edition required the various footprints of the MTN Group to roll out innovative projects that can guarantee access to education by the greatest majority. 96% of MTN Cameroon staff accompanied by their partners this year executed a series of innovative initiatives, focusing on inclusive education in a bid to offer efficient solutions to the difficulties faced by handicapped persons in their communities.

The 2015 #YelloCare projects rolled out by MTNC staff notably included:

  • Construction of 08 classrooms and dormitory for CEFPAMAVOC in Douala and CJARC in Yaounde.
  • Installation of 03 toy libraries for visually impaired children;
  • Training over 50 teachers on the inclusion of ICTs in their teaching methods;
  • Computerizing the management systems of secondary schools, with as pilot ;
  • Sensitization of pygmies on the importance of education and distribution of school kits and didactic materials to this community.

Addressing MTN Cameroon employees following the winner announcement, CEO Philisiwe Sibiya said “The strength of every leading organization is its people, and that is our pride at MTNC. Your selflessness in contributing sustainably to the welfare of our communities has propelled us to the n°1 spot within the MTN Group in the domain of CSR. MTN Cameroon has truly merited its place in the league of champions.”

Over four consecutive years, MTN Cameroon has emerged as winner of this Group-wide Challenge three times and runner-up once. No other OPCO has achieved this feat. MTNC has also systematically bagged several other accolades in recognition of its superior performance since the programme was launched in 2007.

As winner of the 2015 edition, MTN employees will receive the Group President & CEO prize of USD100,000 to be reinvested in corporate social responsibility initiatives in the country.

In March 2015, MTN Cameroon staff officially received a 500 meters square piece of land destined for the construction of a Mother-Child pavilion at the Bonassama District Hospital in the Douala IV municipality, Littoral Region with the USD 200.000 won from the 2012 and 2013 editions of “21 Days of Y’ello Care”.
