Accra, Ghana

Ghana is on track to register 95% of the SIM cards in use by the June deadline for all SIM cards to be registered.

According to Ghana’ s National Communication Authority, 85% of the SIM cards in use in the country had been registered so far. The NCA expects to have nearly all of them registered by the cut-off date at the end of June this year.

The NCA warned cellphone users not to attempt to register using false documentation, and urged people not to buy SIM cards that were claimed to have been pre-registered.

Ghana is one of several African countries now enforcing registration of SIM cards in a bid to curb crime. Recently, Zimbabwe began cutting off over 30% of its cellphone users, who had failed to register their SIMs by the cut-off date.
