Malawi President seeks ‘Spy Machine’ answers
Malawi’s President Bingu wa Mutharika is reported to have met the ICT Minister and the regulator over the contentious ‘Spy Machine’.
The so-called ‘Spy Machine’ is a system aimed at logging calls to track telecoms revenues due to the government.
However, much debate has arisen over the system, due to fears over privacy and concerns about the cost of the system and the way in which the tender was awarded.
The President is reported to have summoned ICT Minister Patricia Kaliati, the Principal Secretary James Kalirangwe and Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) board chairman Ted Nandolo to Blantyre to discuss the controversy over the system this week.
No official statement was immediately available on the meeting.
