Lonestar takes mobile money to Liberia
Lonestar Cell GSM, a member of the MTN Group, has officially launched its Mobile Money service in the country, in partnership with Ecobank-Liberia.
The Minister of Internal Affairs, Harrison Kanwea launched the new technology on behalf of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
He commented that mobile money was long overdue in Liberia, and expressed the hope that the system would bring financial viability to the Liberian people and also boost Government revenue generation.
The MD of Ecobank Liberia, Kola Adeleke, said the launch was part of a vision of his institution and Lonestar Cell MTN to modernise the banking and financial sector for the Liberian people.
While only around 10% of Liberians have bank accounts, over 40% of the population has mobile phones.
