Lagos masts agency starts work
The new masts agency of Nigeria’s Lagos State Government says it has been mandated to commence regulatory functions with immediate effect.
The new agency, known as Urban Furniture Regulatory Unit (UFRU), has been established through the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, to regulate the activities of telecommunications operators and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the area of masts and towers installations.
The new agency head, Joe Ibokwe, said the agency would regulate mast installations. The state recently recorded at least two deaths due to telecoms masts that collapsed during storms.
Meanwhile, the Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has said its members would vehemently resist more telecoms regulation in the state. ALTON said that while it had no objection to environmental regulation, it feared that additional laws and agencies would slow telecoms progress.
