Kenya SIM reg deadline passes
Over 80% of SIM cards were registered by the midnight 31 December deadline, says Kenya’s regulator.
The regulator, the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) said that by 28 December, 80.4% of the 30.8 million SIM cards in use had been registered. The CCK said there would be no extension of the 31 December deadline for registration, and that unregistered SIMs would be disconnected after the cut-off date.
However, facebook posts by unregistered SIM card users today indicated that not all unregistered SIM cards had been cut off by 3 January.
The number of SIMs registered by the deadline is likely to be higher than 80%, since large numbers of mobile users were reported to have streamed to outlets to register on the last few days ahead of the cut-off date.
