A summit to deliberate on how African states can allow free and faster provision of government data to the public through online portals opens in Kenya’s coastal city, Mombasa, on Wednesday.
The Open Governance Partnership Conference brings together African countries committed to adopting ICT as a tool to promote transparency in governments as well as increase public service delivery.
Kenya was the pioneer in sub-Saharan Africa on launching an open data website in 2011, making available data sets on government spending, census and sector specific statistics.
According Kenya’s Ministry of ICT permanent secretary, Dr. Bitange Ndemo, adopting open data websites by governments would promote citizen participation in economic development.
Kenya is expected to offer key lessons to the participants on how to inculcate technology in governments and the benefits thereof.
