Internet users in Kenya keen to learn how to hack Wifi – Google Report

How to hack wifi and how to hack a phone were among the top online search terms in Kenya this year, illustrating the growing cyber security risks facing internet users as penetration deepens.

In a report released by global tech firm Google, 'What Kenyans searched for in 2019', users searched how to download videos from YouTube, create a website, to take care of a phone and how to hack wifi.

This revelation is coming on the backdrop of a recent report by the National Kenya Computer Incident Response Team Coordination Centre that placed the country among the top 10 countries in the continent with the highest number of people exposed to cybercrime.

It however fared well compared to Nigeria and South Africa which took the first and second positions respectively. Last year, the National Cybersecurity Centre (NCC) detected 51.9 million threats, compared to 22.1 million recorded in the 2017-2018 period.

In a separate report released by tech firm Serianu Consulting mid this year, the Kenyan economy suffered losses totalling nearly Sh 30 billion from cyber threats and attacks. The annual cost of fighting cybercrime is expected to reach Sh600 trillion by 2021 with the global toll of cybercrime damage estimated to hit the same amount.

Form one selection 2020 was top trending news search in the country after it emerged that several top students were not posted in the national high schools of their choice. It was followed by Huduma Number and Likoni Ferry tragedy in that order.

The late Bob Collymore, Safaricom Plc's chief executive who died of cancer on July 1, was the most searched local personality followed by Male Marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge.

Former Zimbabwe strongman Late Robert Mugabe and afro pop maestro the Late Oliver Mtukudzi were most searched international personalities in Kenya.

According to Google, Kenyans were curious to know what census was after the country carried out the national survey done every after 10 years in August. They were also curious to know about Huduma number and xenophobia.

Africa Cup of Nations 2019 tournament played in Egypt in July was the most searched in the sports category while Game of Thrones Season 8 and Money Heist Season 3 dominated the movie and TV Shows sector.
