India to finance Maputo power project
The public company Electricity of Mozambique (EDM) has announced the implementation of a USD250 million electrification project in Maputo, funded by the Indian government.
The Chairman of the EDM Board, Augusto de Sousa Fernando, said the project was expected to get underway later this year, and should be completed by 2016.
While the project was expected to significantly improve power supply in the region, he said, new investments are needed on a regular basis to meet the growing demand for energy. Currently, the access rate of electrification in Mozambique is 23% .
