Huawei gives UB over $150,000 in telecoms equipment

The University of Botswana got a timely shot-in-the-arm with an equipment donation from one of the top technology companies in the world, Huawei. The Vice President of the Southern Africa Region Enterprise Business (Huawei) Meng Qingbao paid a site visit to view the assembly and erection of Outdoor telecommunications training center worth over $150 000.00 donated by his company to the University of Botswana on November 7, 2019.

The Outdoor training Center will be commissioned by December 2019. UB Students will have access to 2G/3G/4G, GSM Antennae, Transmission and power solution with rectifiers. “This outdoor initiative forms an additional value to another proposal of accrediting the University of Botswana to become a Huawei ICT Academy. The academy will comprise internet protocol (IP) equipment (routers and Switches) and information technology (IT) equipment (Servers and Storage) and UPS as a complete training equipment,” said a statement in the hands of biztechafrica.

According to information retrieved by this reporter, the purpose of the Huawei ICT academy is to provide training and industry certification for students and professionals in computer networking and cloud computing. This will assist the University of Botswana in producing the much-needed industry ready students, as well as providing for continuous professional development.

“The Huawei ICT academy and donated telecommunications towers will further provide the much-needed equipment for practical sessions for the telecommunications and networking courses offered by the Department of Electrical Engineering. This will greatly assist the department as it seeks international accreditation of its Bachelor of Engineering programmes.”

In addition, the academy will provide complimentary training equipment and data for the Department of Computer Science’s High-Performance Computing centre.

The site visit offered UB Senior Management and Huawei the opportunity to see work in progress. An official handover of the equipment will be done at a later date after the project has been completed.

Meanwhile, Mr Meng is also in Botswana as guest speaker for the UB Foundation Fundraising Dinner at the Gaborone International Convention Centre on Friday November 8, 2019 from 6 pm. He will speak on the theme ‘How the Fourth Industrial Revolution can address Africa’s Economic Vulnerabilities.’ As a leading global provider of information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure and smart devices Huawei is among IT companies which play an impactful role in this revolution

Huawei has since 2015, been sending University of Botswana students from the Department of Computer Science to China as part of Seeds for the Future and talent activation programme. In 2018, the invitation was also extended to students from UB’s Department of Electrical Engineering, Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) and Botho University.

UB students have also been participating in the Huawei ICT competitions since 2018. The purpose of these competitions is to help the student to attain Huawei professional certificates and competency while still at tertiary level and such improves the students’ chances of fitting well into the industrial demands or workforce.

“This existing UB – Huawei relations have paved the way for collaborative development and supervision of Electrical/Electronic Engineering and Computer Science student projects, as well as UB graduate student research projects,” said the statement.
