High regional roaming fees ‘a concern’
High inter regional roaming charges between East African countries is quite worrying and needs to be revised to ease the cost of communication, says Amb. Bruce Madete, Senior Deputy Secretary Administration in Kenya’s Ministry of Information, Communications and Technology.
Amb. Madete was speaking during the opening of the East African Communications Organizations (EACO) Assemblies at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre, Nairobi.
He noted that roaming charges between Kenya and Burundi are much higher than between Kenya and United Kingdom or India adding that these charges negate the very essence of integration and hinders communication and trade within the region. He observed that if this trend persists, achieving an East African regional market will remain a dream.
He challenged regulators in the region to develop an interconnection framework for ICT and postal networks in order to ensure that the region enjoys seamless connectivity.
