Ghana switch to boost e-commerce

Ghana’s Interbank Payment and Settlement System (GhIPSS) switch is expected to galvanise e-commerce and electronic payments when it comes into operation.

The switch is now being tested for interoperability and is expected to go live next month.

It will allow consumers to transact at any ATM or point of sale device, and will enable them to pay for goods online.

Fred France, Chief Executive Officer of GhIPSS, said a number of businesses were already preparing to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the e-commerce gateway.

He expected many new businesses to emerge as people shop and pay online.

“The national switch will become operational by next month and the banks will then be expected to connect to the system to ensure that their customers enjoy the enhanced service,” the statement said.
