Ghana readies BPO centre

The government of Ghana wants to improve the country’s information and communication technology (ICT) and try to keep up with the fast-changing trends of technological revolution by launching a $5-million project called Business Processing and Outsourcing (BPO) Centre.
The soon-to-be-operating BPO Centre, currently under construction in Accra, will serve as an ICT nerve centre, where all data will be received, and information processed and outsourced to agencies inside and outside Ghana.
The project is creating over 10 000 jobs, the communications ministry, which launched the project, said.
Ghana enacted an ICT development policy in February 2004 with 14 priority areas. But the country’s ICT services have since gone to sleep due to lack of political will and government’s reluctance of spend aggressively on ICT.
The state-funded ICT services have also not kept up with the latest developments and advances, to such an extent that the country’s e-government sector has been found wanting in many aspects.
Unlike other Africa’s fast-growing and emerging economies such as South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria, Ghana lacks world class ICT infrastructure capable of steering economic and social development and eradicating poverty.
But communications minister Edward Omane Boamah said the country was determined to catch up with the growth of ICT around the globe, adding that similar projects will be rolled out nationwide to improve ICT services.
Boamad also said that another ICT project of a huge magnitude includes the establishment of an e-learning centre, which it said will improve access to information to medical personnel, using ICT.
