Ghana MNP launches
By Nana Appiah Acquaye, Accra, Ghana
Mobile Number Portability (MNP) has now come into effect in Ghana, says the National Communications Authority (NCA).
MNP is a service that permits a customer to keep his or her mobile phone number when changing from one mobile service provider to another. This service will be available permanently in Ghana from the launch date.
According to a statement issued in Accra and signed by the Director General of NCA, all technical systems relating to MNP at each of the five current mobile networks have been successfully tested in conjunction with the central systems operated by Porting Access Ghana Limited.
In view of the fact that July 1 to 3 was a public holiday weekend and that passages of the Legislative Instrument comprising the MNP Regulations were expected on July 6, the mobile operators, Porting Access, and NCA have jointly decided to formally launch MNP in Ghana on July 7, 2011.
From today, the service is available to the public, who should start the process by visiting a shop for the mobile company they wish to join.
NCA said it was grateful for the cooperation received and intense effort made by all parties involved in moving the telecommunications industry in Ghana forward to this significant milestone in its development.
