Ghana’ s 17 million cellphone subscribers will be able to switch operators without losing their numbers from mid-2011, according to the country’ s National Communications Authority (NCA).

The NCA said at a media briefing this week that mobile number portability would come into effect from July this year, allowing subscribers to switch to new operators without losing their numbers.

This is expected to increase competition between the country’ s six mobile service providers.

Joshua K. Peprah, Director, Regulatory Administration at the NCA, says customers would have to be paid for any unused deposits when they change operators, but prepaid subscribers will lose any airtime credits when they leave one operator for another.
