Ghana deactivates SIMs

With the 3 March deadline for SIM card registration now past, Ghana has begun deactivating unregistered SIMs.

The National Communications Authority (NCA) said over 2.5 million unused and inactive SIM cards had already been deactivated.

However, the NCA had extended the window of opportunity to holders of active SIM cards whose cards had not yet been properly registered.

These users would be able to receive calls and SMS messages, but not make calls or send messages, until they registered their SIM cards.

NCA Director General Paarock van Percy said over 6 million SIM cards had been successfully registered during the exercise.
