Fake IDs ‘marred Ghana SIM reg’
Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Dr. Edward Omane- Boamah, says the Ministry is of the view that the SIM card registration exercise needed to be re-run because of the use of fake identification cards, which marred the otherwise well-intended exercise.
“Our position is that this re-registration must be done if and only if the National Identification Authority completes the issuance of the National Identification Cards. That will serve as the only form of Identification for the exercise,” ‘he added
He was speaking at a Digital Family Forum hosted by the Ministry for stakeholders, policy makers, regulators and the private sector in Accra.
Dr Omane-Boamah disclosed that as at the end of last year, the total telephone subscriptions grew to over 28 million subscribers from a 2012 figure of over 25million while mobile data also grew up to 10 million subscribers by the end of 2013, highlighting the growing importance of mobile internet in Ghana.
