DSTV expands African mobile services
South Africa-based pay TV operator DSTV has launched a bouquet of 16 TV channels to Safaricom mobile subscribers in Kenya and has launched to Vodacom customers in Tanzania.
Up to 800 000 Safaricom subscribers using 3G handsets will now be able to watch a choice of 16 TV channels on their phones. Vodacom Tanzania subscribers will be able to access five channels.
In Kenya, Safaricom and DSTV first partnered five years ago, offering TV streamed to specialized handsets. The expanded deal takes content to viewers for a fee of Sh250 a week.
The move comes amid reports that other TV operators and mobile firms intends to offer similar mobile TV services soon.
In Tanzania, the service is new and will be free for the first three months.
In both countries, the offerings include sport, news and entertainment.
DSTV Mobile is also available in Ghana, Namibia, Nigeria and South Africa.
