Chinese tech firm Konka opens shop in Nigeria
By Kokumo Goodie, Lagos, Nigeria
Another Chinese technology firm, Konka Telecoms of China, yesterday opened shop in Nigeria with a pledge to deepen competition in the mobile phone market and give customers opportunities to experience the cutting edge technology which is associated with its products.
The firm said it is using Nigeria as its launch pad to other parts of the continent, adding that with its partner, Mansales Nigeria Limited, the firm will expand its tentacles to all parts of the country and open more after-sales service centres in addition to the one it has in Lagos.
Speaking during the launch of its range of mobile phones which included Konka W550 and others, the Chairman, Mansales Limited, Engr. Elens Eigbokhan, lamented that for so long, Nigerians had been ripped off through the breach of promise characterised by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) not keeping to their promises.
He recalled his harrowing experience in the hands of some OEMs, adding that Mansales team was compelled to form a company that would bridge the gap between the end users and quality mobile phones.
According to him, the search for a reputable technology firm to fill the space led to the partnership between Mansales and Konka Telecoms of China.
He said the Konka will keep its promises to its customers in the country by offering quick after-sales service and quality products.
Also speaking on the occasion, Sales Manager, Konka Telecoms of China, Evangelous Hsieh, said the firm had taken its time to expand to Africa, adding that its choice of Nigeria as a launching pad was not a mistake as the country has the biggest market on the continent.
Evangelous said having come to Nigeria, the firm has come to stay, promising to work towards growing the brand in the country and stocking the market with mobile devices that has been tried and tested in other parts of the world.
He said the firm, the Konka Group, was established in 1980 as China’s first Sino-foreign joint consumer electronics enterprise manufacturing and distributing its own brand of prime quality products.
He said: “The Konka Group’s major product lines are colour TV sets and mobile phones, refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, components, e-display-LED display, LCD splicing wall, digital signage, packaging materials, digital set top box and multimedia players; others are home-appliances, inverters.
“It has seven major manufacturing plants in China and has established production bases in India, Indonesia, Slovakia, Mexico and recently in Turkey with three world class research and development (R&D) centres in China and one in Silicon Valley, California, USA.
“Konka is one of the four members of the China National High Definition Digital TV Standardisation Specialist Committee and is also a member of the American Digitak TV Alliance.”
With Group revenue running into over $4billion with capacity to manufacture 24million phones daily, Konka is the first generation China’s consumer electronic products and mobile handset company. It is in the top 10 of “China's well known trademarks” and top 3 most valuable Chinese electronic brand with over 25,000 workforce.
