Max Bartholomew Ahouèkè

Benin’s Minister in charge of communication, Max Bartholomew Ahouèkè, has officially launched a study on the development of a strategy for broadband.

The Minister said that by June last year, Benin had around 375,919 internet users – a penetration rate of only 4.08%. Its mobile penetration stood at 89% and fixed telephone penetration was 11%.

The Minister concluded that although there had been growth, the rate of Internet penetration is still very low compared to the potential of the country.

He said: "A considerable effort is still needed to allow a greater number of citizens to have access to broadband Internet."

The nine-month study will look into an expansion plan for broadband in the country.
