ATU members meet on digital migration

African Telecommunications Union (ATU) members have met in Nigeria to discuss progress towards meeting 2015 deadline for Digital Migration.

Digital TV Africa 2013, under the theme, ‘Strategies for meeting the 2015 transition deadline,’ was staged last week at Sheraton Hotel, Lagos, Nigeria.

The workshop, which has attracted key decision makers in broadcasting, telecommunications, spectrum management, Policy Makers and Regulators in charge of transition from analogue to digital terrestrial broadcasting, broadcasters, manufacturers, vendors and academia from Africa and beyond, was aimed at building the capacity of participants, exchanging views and experiences and assessing progress made on digital transition from analogue.

It was also aimed at adopting strategies to meet the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) switch off date of December, 2015. The event was organised by ATU in collaboration with Kemilinks International, Nepad Agency, with the support of National Broadcasting Commission (NCC) of Nigeria.

A number of African countries, including Malawi, have already started the process of digital migration. While ITU has set the deadline of June, 2015, SADC has set it at December, 2013. Most African countries, including Malawi, RSA, Tanzania, are aiming to beat the SADC deadline.
