Android apps for Africa
s Android market is now available in 99 new countries and 26 African countries, including South Africa, Kenya, Uganda, Senegal, Ghana and Nigeria.
Android phone users in these countries will now be able to buy new apps and download free apps from the market, which has over 200 000 applications available for Android-powered handsets.
The apps include games, entertainment, social and business apps and movies to rent, among others.
Google notes that there are now over 100 million activated Android devices, with 400 000 new ones being activated every day. 4.5 million applications have already been installed from Android Market.
Google adds that Android was designed to extend beyond the mobile phone, so Google has developed Android Open Accessory to help developers start building new hardware accessories that will work across all Android devices.
It has previewed an initiative called [email protected], which allows Android apps to discover, connect and communicate with appliances and devices in users' homes.
