Airtel, Safaricom plan fibre JV

Airtel Kenya and Safaricom may enter a partnership to jointly deploy a fibre optic network in Kenya.

The two telcos are considering a joint venture that will see them roll out an independent network, to end their reliance on third parties for internet access.

Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore said his company had also approached other telcos for similar agreements, but so far, only talks with Airtel had taken place.

He envisaged rolling out the new network within the next financial year.

Safaricom has also initiated tower-sharing agreements in Kenya, also aimed at reducing operating costs and facilitating faster network expansion.
