Airtel Money, Metropolitan partner on insurance and micro savings

Bharti Airtel customers can now access insurance and micro savings services courtesy of the company's partnership with Metropolitan International (MMI).

The partnership between both entities enables MMI’s brand, Metropolitan, to market and sell its products through Airtel’s telecommunications networks in five countries: Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania and Zambia.

“Airtel customers are poised to greatly benefit from this new agreement which eliminates all the hassles and complications involved in buying insurance and micro savings services,” Chidi Okpala, Director & Africa Head, Airtel Money said.

Bharti Airtel (“Airtel”), is a telecommunications services provider with operations in 20 countries across Asia and Africa and MMI Holdings Limited (MMI) is an insurance-based financial services company listed on the South African stock exchange, the JSE.

According to Okpala, by launching this partnership with Metropolitan, Airtel aims at bringing relevant services to the fingertips of millions of people across Africa. 

“A huge chunk of the African population doesn’t have access to financial services. However, the mobile telephony penetration rate in Africa keeps growing each year. At Airtel, we have identified the gap in the market and we’ve decided to fill it.  The strategic partnership we have struck with Metropolitan will allow millions of our customers to have peace of mind”, said Okpala.

Mervyn Cookson, CEO for Metropolitan International, said the partnership will forge a completely new path for financial services in Africa.”

The mobile handset is gaining popularity in the region thus the new partnership is likely to grow in leaps if embraced by the targeted users.
