Africa will need 150,000 towers

Helios Towers Ghana says infrastructure sharing is the solution to the massive need for new telecommunications towers across Africa.

The company says that consumer demand for better coverage and more data services means around 150,000 towers will be needed across Africa over the next five years – double the number in place today.

Helios Towers Ghana Director Michael Okine, speaking in Freetown, Sierra Leone, at the 7th Annual Connecting Rural Communities Africa Forum 2012, said by sharing infrastructure, operators could cut the costs of meeting this growing demand for more services, and reach isolated communities.
