Zim stages hackathon
SOFTWARE| July 19, 2012, 11:05 a.m.
Zimbabwe will hold its first ever hackathon next week Thursday, with developers from around the country taking part in a 12-hour digital application development challenge.
The event is sponsored by Alpha Media Holdings (AMH), publishers of Newsday, The Standard and the Zimbabwe Independent.
“The AMH Hackathon seeks to provide a platform and space where young and talented Zimbabweans brain storm, collaborate and compete in innovating for the future. Technology will play a huge role in Zimbabwe's future and we want to help nurture and cultivate that talent for the benefit of us all,” said group chairman, Trevor Ncube.
“We are happy when Zimbabweans succeed and ready to celebrate this success.”
A total of 15 developers, individually or in teams, are expected to come up with and develop innovative applications (apps) and tools within the 12 hours the event will run for and winners will be selected upon completion.
A hackathon - also known as a hackfest or hack day - is an event in which web developers, software developers, mobile developers among others collaborate on software-related projects.
Ncube said AMH may adapt some of the apps to illustrate innovation across its digital platforms.
“We want to help talented young Zimbabweans build applications to solve the problems that we encounter in business and our daily lives. The hackathon will be a space for creativity, collaboration, competition and inspiration,” Ncube said.
