Zambian authorities seize fake Samsung phones
ZAMBIABy BiztechAfrica - Aug. 12, 2012, 8:41 p.m.
Zambia’s authorities have seized over 2600 suspected counterfeit Samsung handsets.
A combined task force of Zambian police, Zambia Bureau of Standards and Cycorp Zambia Limited officials are reported to have swooped on traders in Lusaka and in the Copperbelt region, seizing suspected fake handsets and accessories with a street value of around K8.2 billion.
Late last year, Zambia’s telecoms regulator warned that it would clamp down on counterfeit phones.
The Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) director general, Margaret Mudenda, said the authorities were stepping up their fight against cheap, counterfeit handsets now flooding the market.
She warned traders against selling such devices and said Zambia would not be used as a dumping ground for inferior and possibly hazardous ICT equipment.
