In an effort to support the growth of the mobile money service Telekom Networks Malawi Limited (TNM) one of the country’s two mobile telecommunications operators, has set aside K16m to be given to its mobile money service called Mpamba.
Just this week, 21 mobile money agents for TNM’s Mpamba mobile money service have shared a total of K1.6 million during first draw of the new promotion called ‘Kuiphula ndi Mpamba’, and senior officials say the response is commendable.
Launched on April 1, the promotion is specifically meant for Mpamba agents and runs up to July 31, 2015. The grand winner will cart home K2 million. A total of K16 million is up for grabs in the promotion.
To qualify for the fortnight prizes TNM Mpamba agents are required to carry out a minimum of 20 transactions either cashing in or cashing out. During the first draw three agents from three regions received K200,000 each and another three Mpamba agents walked away with K100,000 each while 15 others got K50,000 each, five from each of the country’s three regions.
TNM Head of Mobile Money Webster Mbekeani said at the draw Wednesday that the first fortnight of the promotion had seen an increased interest and participation by agents and retailers.
“TNM conducts these promotions to appreciate the role of our various stakeholders, and this time around we thought why not reward our agents, the middle men and women who take Mpamba to the mass market? And so far, the response is encouraging,” said Mbekeani.
Mbekeani commended agents for supporting the growth of the mobile money service and said this was why TNM is rewarding them through the promotion.
