Tigo, Skyy Multimedia improve education

Mobile operator Tigo has partnered with Skyy Multimedia to embark on an educational project dubbed the “Tigo Skyy Educational Project”.

According to Tigo, the project, which is worth over GH¢10,000, will be operating in six communities in the Western Region. It aims to improve the declining educational standards in 46 basic schools in communities like Kansaworado, Diambene, Ntankoful, Nkroful, Mampong and Akromakrom, all in the Western Region.

These have been recognized as areas where schools score zero pass rate and most of the students lack the opportunity to re-sit their Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE).

The project comprises a 5 member Committee from each community appointed to work daily to ensure that pupils in various schools concentrate on their studies after normal school hours.

Each community has an active School Management Committee and a Parent Teacher Association (PTA) board supervising teaching and learning in each school under the project.

This year, the project witnessed an inter-community quiz, which is a way of showcasing the progress students have made so far.  32 basic schools participated in this event, with the two best pupils from each of the six communities at the basic level (KG, Primary and Junior High School) making great progress in the contest on Friday, 13th July at Skyy House Theatre.

All the students who participated were rewarded with books, pens and bags, whilst the winners of the quiz were awarded Skyy Decoders, radio sets and clocks.

Commenting on the project, Tenu Awoonor, Head of Marketing noted how Tigo Ghana yearns to assist needy communities through such avenues like these. “At Tigo, we are always looking for ground-breaking avenues to put smiles on the faces of people and enriching the lives of children in the country” he added.

Awoonor intimated that Tigo will continue to focus on education and other social issues affecting children, since these project falls under Tigo Ghana’s bouquet of CSR initiatives. “This, we are proud to say, is being manifest through our Corporate Social Initiatives and the quality of services we provide to our customers and the general public”.

He announced that Tigo will soon start service training for the teachers, management training for head teachers, as well as holding durbars and sensitizing community members on the roles they need to play in educating their children.                                                       

The Tigo Skyy Educational Project is initiated by the Skyy Group, Tigo and managed by J. C. Quansah, former Western Regional Director of Education, with five other members drawn from the various communities making up the board.
