Team Botswana gets social network support

By John Churu, Gaborone, Botswana

Other than South Africa, Southern Africa has little to show for its appearance at the 2012 London Olympics to date. But this has not bothered sports fans, who are keeping various social networks awash with pictures and news of the country's teams in London. One of Team Botswana’s medal hopefuls, Oteng Oteng, who was representing the country in the flyweight division in the sport of boxing, was knocked out in the initial stages. All eyes are now trained on one of the country’s best female sprinters Amantle Montso.

Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa did his country proud by winning a gold medal in the men’s 100m breaststroke in a world record time. South Africa's first medal at the London Olympic Games has been lauded by sports minister Fikile Mbalula. "We are now counted amongst the best in the world," Mbalula said in a statement late Sunday night.

However Batswana are unfazed by the fact that their team is not yet in the medals tally and continue to tweet and facebook among themselves about the team’s performance or lack of at the 2012 London Games.
