Tanzania, Uganda link construction this year
INTERNET
By BiztechAfrica - Oct. 10, 2012, 8:41 a.m.The governments of Tanzania and Uganda will start construction this year on a fibre optic cable link connecting them.
The cable will run via Mutukula on the border between the two countries.
The Director for Technical Services at National Information Technology Authority Uganda (NITA-U), Peter Kahiigi, said construction on the new cable was scheduled to begin in November this year.
He said the alternative network would safeguard against dependence on Uganda’s current main link – a cable through Kenya.
Tanzania Telecommunication Company Limited (TTCL) executive Nicodemus Mnungu said Uganda would lease circuits to transfer internet data from Dar es Salaam to Mutukula, and on into Uganda. He added that TTCL was also in talks with Burundi, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique to connect to TTCL Broadband.
