Safaricom marks 7 years of M-PESA

Safaricom is marking the 7th anniversary of the launch of  its successful mobile money transfer service, M-PESA.

Launched by former Safaricom Chief Executive Michael Joseph in March 6, 2007, M-PESA saw rapid uptake with over two million users by the end of its first year.

Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore said in marking the seventh anniversary that possibly banks had misunderstood M-PESA the most, initially seeing it as a threat. He said: “M-PESA has given Kenya something to be proud of, and made a difference in the lives of ordinary people.”

M-PESA says it has cemented itself as the most convenient and comforting mobile phone-based financial service, the world over.  Now used by over 17 million people, M-PESA has over 65,547 agent outlets, 1,482 paybill partners and 541 bulk payment partners.
