Namibia, Botswana officially welcome WACS
NAMIBIA| June 27, 2012, 1:08 p.m.
Namibia and Botswana have officially inaugurated their links to the USD750 million West African Cable System (WACS).
The 14,000km WACS cable brings better, cheaper connectivity to both countries, from the landing point at Swakopmund in Namibia.
Botswana and Namibia shared the costs of the cable, with funding from the government, the Botswana Telecommunication Corporation BTC, the Namibian Government, Telecom Namibia and Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC). Telecom Namibia will operate and manage the landing station,
Namibian President Hifikepunye Pohamba said at the ceremony in Swakopmund that the new connectivity would be taken to all 13 regions of the country, helping to develop the economy.
Botswana President Ian Khama, who was on a three-day state visit to Namibia, said the cable would bring the two countries closer together and benefit both.
