By Nana Appiah Acquaye, Accra, Ghana
MTN Ghana's General Manager for Mobile Financial Services, Eli Hini, has told Biztechafrica that MTN Ghana is collaborating with the Bank of Ghana to set up a special registry for the operations of mobile money agents in the country.
The new Agent Registry, according to Mr. Hini, is aimed at monitoring and managing the operations of mobile financial services agents to ensure that the unscrupulous ones who per their actions give the industry a bad name are always kept in check.
“The whole idea is to have a good view of all the agents in the industry so that we will be able to monitor their operation, and then when we pick up agents who goes against the rules and regulations of the industry we will blacklist and be able to manage to ensure that blacklisted agent don’t come back into the industry again. And so with registry we are able to have a full view, monitor, manage and ensure that we keep the taps on the bad nuts in the agent operations,” he stressed.
The General Manager for Mobile Financial Services made this disclosure to Biztechafrica during an exclusive interview after the maiden edition of Mobile Money Agents Awards Night held at the luxurious Swiss Alisa Hotel in Accra.
Eli Hini is hopeful that the mobile financial services industry come next year, will experience a tremendous growth and indicated that MTN Ghana’s focus will be on making sure that customers do more transactions, using the mobile wallets to pay for all their services.
“Next year, we expect the service of the industry to grow, our focus is making the wallet more transactional so that people will use it for everyday payment stuff and all the other financial services they want to access.
As we speak through mobile money we have been able to mobilize about 2 billion Ghana Cedis which is available to the banking industry. And so if we continue to grow at that pace you can imagine the amount of money we would mope up from the system which becomes available to the financial industry to be able to do a lot more. So for us that’s what we see and that’s where we expect it to be. We want to digitize the economy and ensure that we reduce as much as possible the use of cash in our economy,” he said.
The ceremony which was attend by Mobile Money Agents within the Greater Accra Region witnessed the presentation of prizes ranging from Televisions, Generator Sets, Handset Devices and Motorbikes. The Overall Best Mobile Money Super Agent award went to Notable E-Solutions.
